What is Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy?
As humans, we are naturally wired to avoid pain—this is built into our DNA and has been essential for survival. Over time, as direct threats in our environment have lessened, our brains have developed more subtle ways to try to avoid discomfort or perceived danger—even in situations where there is no real harm.
This can show up in everyday life in many ways: canceling plans with friends to avoid social comparison or self-doubt, turning down a promotion because of worry about meeting new expectations, or keeping ourselves constantly busy to avoid the emotions that come with loss or grief.
Sometimes, we do approach a challenging situation but then feel compelled to repeat certain behaviors to manage the anxiety that arises—checking, over-correcting, seeking reassurance, or other compulsive actions. While these behaviors may provide short-term relief, they teach the brain that the situation is dangerous and that we cannot cope. Over time, this avoidance and repeated anxiety-driven behavior actually maintain and increase anxiety, keeping us stuck in a cycle we want to break.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. ERP helps clients gradually and safely face the situations they want to approach, while learning to resist the behaviors that keep them trapped in anxiety. Over time, this practice reduces fear and builds confidence, helping individuals reclaim freedom in their daily lives.
I specialize in Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy and would be honored to help guide you through facing your fears and learning new skills to help you live your best life.
